I just want a copy of the blockchain (initial block dowload).
Is running firod -daemon enough?

I’m not sure if I follow what you’re trying to do? Were you having trouble syncing with your wallet?
I want to do an initial block download on a headless server without creating a wallet.
You can start firod with the flag -disablewallet. This will prevent wallet creation.
